Llavi Mayu Project

K’apaj Rancho is a high-altitude community whose residents work in nearby mines and farm sheep, llamas, potatoes, wheat, and other crops that can withstand the area’s harsh climate. Most of the population lives in a small village, which is separated by a river from a broad area of flat farmland and a well-maintained dirt road. That road in turn provides access to a secondary school and health post in the nearby town of Tubería, as well as transportation to Pocoata, Sucre, and Oruro. During the rainy season, the river floods often. Waters rise quickly and unpredictably, cutting off access to education and health care and leaving residents unable to reach farms and work opportunities.
