Mishka Mayu Project

Miskha Mayu is a rural agricultural community that sits on the east bank of a river of the same name. It features a concentration of houses and a school that students from the village and surrounding farmland attend. Across the river from Miskha Mayu, a well-maintained dirt road provides access to a health center two kilometers away and frequent public transportation to the town of Tarabuco. Tarabuco offers a wealth of amenities, including markets for selling farm produce, stores, a well-equipped hospital, and onward transportation to the modern city of Sucre.

PROJECT

Although Miskha Mayu is only about one hundred meters from the road, the river floods frequently during the rainy season, four or five months out of the year. When the river floods, children cannot reach class and those needing medical attention are unable to receive care. Prolonged floods may cause farm produce to rot before it can be carried to market and the loss of work opportunities as community members find themselves unable to travel out of the community to larger population centers.

IMPACT

In cooperation with municipal representatives and the beneficiary population, build a suspended footbridge across the river Miskha Mayu to allow safe crossing for pedestrians, motorcycles, wheelbarrows, and livestock.
